Tony Greenberg Publishes “The Myth of the IT Outsourcing RFP”
IT Sourcing Visionary Tells a Tale of a Desperate Kingdom and its RFP Folly
SAN FRANCISCO – Returning to his decade-long crusade against the inefficient process of buying and selling IT services, Tony Greenberg, CEO of outsourcing advisory and media industry research firm RampRate, has published his opinions on the pitfalls of RFP processes in an allegorical story on his blog at www.ramprate.com/blog, Huffington Post and on MediaBizBloggers.com.
In this short tale, a king is concerned about his kingdom and decides to put out an RFP for a solution to his problems. Shortly afterwards, a jester arrives at his doorstep and questions the validity of the RFP. Of course, he offers to help and the ending is not good for either of them.
“We’ve set out to document and reveal the inside nature of IT outsourcing and the lose-lose outcomes that often arise as a result of the games played between buyers and sellers,” says Greenberg. “The whimsical tale highlights the folly typical of most IT sourcing engagements at the onset, whether it’s hosting long-tail content on high-end databases or choosing a CDN that falls over the day you hit it big and get an appearance on Oprah.”
Greenberg says he is also soliciting tales from his readers, offering to post the best of the submissions in his blog, and eventually publishing a coffee table expose’ of these simple lessons. Each tale will end with a checklist of self help tips insuring best practices and success in sourcing.
“We’ve seen problems occur as a result of inaccurate information, personal bias and financial motivation,” says Greenberg. “Information technology outsourcing is by nature a data intensive business, so why don’t we use data to drive the interaction between buyers and sellers rather than persuasion, discounting and commission-driven sales?”
Greenberg and his team will publish 14 more stories covering the world of IT outsourcing procurement from beginning to end. He says he believes the industry still hasn’t created the ideally fluid, dynamic and efficient IT marketplace it needs to function best.
